Enterprising Young Equestrians Raise Funds

The sun was shining over Shropshire on Sunday 19 April 2015 for Kemberton Riding Stables’ Open Day, organised and run by a group of riders who are part of the ‘Young Equestrians’ scheme developed by Hoof, the British Equestrian Federation’s (BEF) participation programme, and delivered through The Pony Club.

The enterprising riders came up with the idea for the Open Day themselves and led the project with support from Kemberton Riding School proprietor, Hannah Lloyd, who was delighted with the team effort; with the money raised going towards a trip to The Pony Club Championships, where the young riders will be taking part in the Centre Equestrian competition.

“Our Open Day is just one of the events put together by our Young Equestrian’s group who have already moved on to their next project” commented Hannah, “The enthusiasm amongst our Young Equestrians for anything horse related is epic, and they constantly impress me with their creativity and ability to organise activities, not just for themselves but for everyone connected with our Pony Club Centre.”

A fun packed programme was on offer for the day, including Dressage and Show Jumping, with classes suitable for entrants of all levels; from lead rein riders to the more experienced.

Molly took part in the event and was delighted to win the Prelim 12 Dressage Class, as well as have a fun day where she gained valuable communication and teamwork skills. Molly commented:

“We really wanted to organise the day because it would give us the chance to ride competitively, which is great practice for the future! It was also an ideal opportunity to fundraise for the stables and charities that are close to our hearts.”

A delicious range of homemade cakes and refreshments were available for riders and their friends and families who gathered to support, as well as a range of popular activities for younger visitors, including a quiz, a treasure hunt and a guess the weight of the lamb competition.

“Organising the Open Day was a fantastic idea created by the whole team” remarked Becky, who helped organise the Open Day. “We have gained a lot from the Open Day including the opportunity to learn how to organise a successful event. We all enjoyed being part of the preparation and completion of the Open Day and we are all looking forward to future events.”

Thanks to Sport England funding, Young Equestrians provides participants with more choice and freedom in how they take part in equestrianism, as well as providing a focus on skill development. Participants can log their sessions at www.youngequestrians.club, where they can record their activities and achievements as well as access training materials offered by The Pony Club.

Riding schools who deliver Young Equestrians are given access to virtual tools to help them establish their group, including example session plans, marketing materials and a host of different ideas on how to retain teenagers in equestrian sport.
