Roxloe Riders Jump Into Action

Teenagers at Roxloe Equestrian Centre, Stockton-on-Tees, are the latest to form a Young Equestrians group; the user-led scheme giving thirteen to eighteen year olds the opportunity to socialise and learn about horses and riding in a fun way.

The launch event was deemed a huge success, with nine members attending to take part in fun and games to break the ice and get to know each other. Games included an on-foot ‘Chase me Charlie’ where the participants jumped a show jumping fence which increased in height until only one person remained who could clear it.

The teens then discussed ideas for the future, which included riding on a beach, giving Western riding a try, visiting shows and horse races and going quad biking. They finished their evening by making plans for the following weekend when they were involved with Roxloe’s Give Horses a Go Day; giving free taster sessions to those wanting to get in the saddle, either for the very first time or after a break.

Eighteen year old Beth Robson is Roxloe’s Young Equestrians group leader. Beth said:

“It was really good planning what we are going to do and telling everyone about our exciting ideas. I am looking forward to being part of Young Equestrians.”

Jill Lowther, Roxloe Equestrian Centre Proprietor, said:

“I think the Young Equestrians will give the teenagers something to focus on as a team; working together and towards goals of their own setting which will give them a sense of achievement and importance. I hope that they will encourage others that are not just a part of our equestrian centre to come along and join them.”

Originally developed by Hoof, the British Equestrian Federation’s (BEF) participation programme, the Young Equestrians scheme is being delivered through The Pony Club and will target riding schools across England. Thanks to Sport England funding, Young Equestrians will provide participants with more choice and freedom in how they take part in equestrianism, as well as providing a focus on skill development.

Riding schools who deliver the programme will be given access to virtual tools to help them establish their Young Equestrians club that include example session plans, marketing materials and a host of different ideas on how to retain teenagers in equestrian sport.
